#16 Tools

Online productivity tools. Web 2.0 tools that helps me be organized. Well, with all the downloading and trying to get it all set in place it took me 3 days just to get this #16 tool complete. I created a start page from iGoogle since, I already had an account. I added some ocean view, little swimming turtles, a daily bible devotional, and set my calender, which was easy. I really did not want to set up my calender. I still like the old paper calender that hangs on my refrigerator. My grandmother tells me eventually I will have to write down what I need from the grocery store, or I will forget it. I like my page, however, I couldn't get my yahoo to link together with my Gmail. I do not like having all to check several places to see info sent to me b/f this class existed. The "To do list" is pretty cool. I didn't find it to hard to set up and use. This may help me if I find myself using the computer on a daily basis, after this class is over. I thought I may get rid of my yahoo, however, It's always been simple for me. I added the "mystickers" to my tool bar. This took my husband forever to help me figure this out. However, working on research papers and thinking of that grocery list. I add a stickie and keep on reading. I really like the stickie idea. My understanding I'll be able to add it everywhere I am on my page.

#15 Wiki's

I absolutely loved the video to show how this wiki stuff works. I have to admit after the flow chart I wasn't looking forward to the next step. However, I succeeded I am now here at the wiki's. I didn't really know what this was going to be reading the word I was thinking some type of tottem pole or voo -doo. This is way cooler. I could definitely use this in my class. Planning to be a Language Art middle school teacher. This is a great way to interact with the students and help them create communication with their peers with projects and overall class rapport I looked at a high-school language class and she had great ideas. Another caught my eye was the Texas librarians. They share a variety of information, of how to get to boys to read, to best books. This was fun. I looked at the APSU 23 things on PBworks and created an account. I'm going to get back to that and play a little bit. I hope all is doing well this wonderful long weekend. Ta Ta for Now, SG

Thing #14 Flowcharts/mind maps

I set up accounts with gliffy and bubbl. Gliffy was the flow chart. I actually thought I would create a classroom. I got aggervated with trying to make multiple desk. I couldn't figure it out. I did start redesigning the layout of my house. I was haveing to much fun with this. Bubbl was the mind chart this was so easy to figure out. I set up a layout of my gardenquest lesson plan. I wanted to be able to compare making same type of layout in gliffy, however I was having trouble making the same flow chart.

#12 Google of All trades

I am impressed with all google provides. Looking over their tools, I really liked that since I was a google customer I didn't have to log in a bunch of times. The site knew who I was. I was looking forward to the google notebook, the site forward me to doc google. Which I have noted how much I love this tool. I was seeking the web, trying to find a disability I could write about. And then I put it in my notebook (doc google). I already keep a calendar on my yahoo, so I found it irrelevant to set up in that site, I did play with Picasa-photo sharing. I found an ocean scene that I just had to share. Both of these sites I think would be safe and great tools for students.

#11 Exploring RSS Feeds

Easiest feed I found was Technorati, I liked that it was about more personal things and picked up easy subjects. I looked at top 10 movies. Simple I liked that. I really didn't find any confusing I did try to use feedster, I tried various subjects and wasn't having much luck. Of course all I have in my mind right now is working on projects for class which contains learning more about media and the perspective we are influenced by, and creating a podcast. Syndic8.com had a great piece on illustrations I liked that and the topic given helped me narrow my search. Topixnet, I know it was world news in many ways, I felt like I was reading gossip. I looked up James Dobson and Joyce Meyers. They are christian motivational speakers that I have spent most of my time listening to and reading their books. However, when I looked at their site, it talked about J. Meyers security guard killing someone, and J. Dobson resigning for some reason. I found this discouraging and not what I was looking for. Google blog search seem to be my favorite. Interesting facts and subjects made it easy to seek out some prospects for me to keep in touch with.

This is great way to have your very own customized newspaper. It Keeps me focused on what I want to read. How could we use this technology in school??? Students could create their own likes page, maybe I suggest a few. Then what a better way for a child to find their own thoughts and opinions and write about them. The technology allows children to be guided in a subject and then being able to reflect what he/she reads. The disadvantage I think is for the children to be overwhelmed with it all, but with tools like this it may just open up quick opportunities to ponder thoughts.
I did share a devotional site to others. Great way to start your newspaper!!

I chose to create a puzzle out of a picture. I thought this would be a great tool when a student iis having writers block. Put a puzzle together and then write about it. Also, if I was to work with elementary children we could create pictures then put them in a puzzle. Great gift idea. Sharing photos online, I really think it should only be open to family and friends. http://bighugelabs.com/photos/e06ca8c4f09e0c8bb660bad7dd7097ea/jigsawd0cbbe2226874e3dae4502145260f888545136b2

Thing #7

Flickr, Awesome to have a memory bank to hold your pic's. The edit button is awesome!!!
I am a member of facebook and keep in touch with alot of people this way. I like the idea of having another way to acess my pictures. I can't help to think if something happen to my computer or old photo albulms "I would hate it". It's nice to have another avenue. Using this program for school. well my web site of the day was one world classroom's and it talked about how you could take pictures in your area then create a collection and submit them. This site could help students ollaborate this together before submiting it in.

Wow, the web 2.0 tools are cool. I have looked at food, you tube, flicker. The one I liked the best was Google Docs http://www.docs.google.com/#. There are so many features to help with writing documents, spreadsheets, presentations and Documents for teachers such as Science, History, student survey and feedback document, a missing assignment spreadsheet and rubric spreadsheet. It's your own cyber space for all the things you write/type. You can control who you want to read it. Keeps you organized and stores your work. Therefore, no matter where you are you can work on it. It has spelling and grammar check and different styles of writing. I think this would be a great site for Language Art students, to keep a journal, write their papers. I can't think of anything that I like about this site. I thought it was awesome.

Web 2.0

Thing #5
What is school 2.0?
After watching endless videos and text I have come to the conclusion that computer stuff isn't going away. It's here to stay. God need to give us more hours in the day for this, or something is about to give. Web has taken away blackboards and textbooks. Information is easily available and communication with others is quicker and sites provides us places to check other out in our family, and our wireless family. We can access info of all kinds, useless and educational.
Schools of the future. Students still need to learn the basics of elementary school and the physical interaction with thier peers. Technology is going to allow individuals the opportunity to be as inquisitive as they want. The visual learners wil be able to see info and grasp better understanding.
Looking over perspectives, I read the Guide for Educators by S. Mclester mentions that students interact on the computer, making them active individuals. Therefore we need to enhance development by using global discussions. We as soon to be teachers need to remember to be open to learn, learn and learn some more. I also liked how D. Jakes put in perspective on how to take in all this web 2.0 stuff. Knowing technology and what it can provide we need to look at our resources, blogs, and digital storytelling and ponder if they are enrichment or essential tools for the students and revaluate our goal in teaching.

Thing #4

Expressing our thought and opinions to others confirms that we are compassionate and care about what others think and sometimes don't think. We also feel like we are a community even though are days are short, the opportunity to interact with another soul is fulfilling. Commenting on someones blog gives that person comfort that someone is listening to them, and have thoughts and advice to give.
other points from the readings about commenting that I found important was the info on keeping a alias, short and simple to remain anonymous. I also liked that on the Ten techniques is learning the only way for it to work is to invite comments, and be open enough to receive those comments graciously. The five in class gave advise and thoughts on several of the tools that we were using in the 23 Things. We all were tickled, frustrated and shared what we learned. Dave Williams, Mith T., Keving Wallace, Amanda Maynard, Lori Jackson. The other sites I kept an eye on was coolcatteacher and the pioneeer woman. Coolcat taught me how to understanding blogging I liked that plus several other insightful tips on classroom and technology. Pioneer woman, I actually commented on a chicken dish she shared, I plan to make it next week for guest.

Thing #2 & #3
Howdy!! From Miss Texas. Deciding how to dress this avatar was challenging. Because my avatars closet did not have any Ann Taylor's outfits, and the second best outfit is a great pair of comfortable jeans and a cotton "t".
If you have read this, then I have successfully set up my blog. Yea-WHO! By Jolee I thinks she's got it.

Thing #1

Creating a learning contract seems like a great idea for this class, even though I know I will accomplish it because I never give up. I am always up to a challenge. My life-long goal would to be able to be open to new technology and learn it to my advantage so I will be able to keep the minds of teenager from disintegrating from all the "bad" stuff that is exposed on the technology realm. The love of outdoors, my tennis shoes and the call of my golf clubs will be my greatest obstacle. Tools needed for this challenging goal will be post it's to remind me, my mind turned on to the bright screen of the computer, a glass of ice tea, and never ending Internet access. My "9-1-1" will be the husband, neighbor, maybe even my teenagers. Dr. Wall will keep on task with due dates and assignments. As the class comes to an end, I will have to keep the goal of always participate in new technology with a post it's dispersed everywhere.
Respectfully, SG
